Climate targetsetting
To limit global warming to a maximum of 1.5 degrees, Albert Heijn and Gall & Gall expect all its suppliers to have climate targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) by 30 June 2025 at the latest. The SBTi is a partnership between CDP, UN Global Compact, WWF and World Resources Institute. The partnership drives ambitious climate action in the private sector by enabling organisations to set science-based emission reduction targets. Organisations can apply to SBTi to have their climate targets validated and approved. Albert Heijn and Gall & Gall have also set Science-Based Targets and we expect our suppliers to do the same.
Albert Heijn and Gall & Gall follow the guidelines and definitions of the SBTi. SBTi distinguishes between:
- Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
- Larger companies
For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
Albert Heijn and Gall & Gall expect SME suppliers to complete the SBTi validation by 30 June 2025 at the latest. This includes a Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions reduction target, and a commitment to measure and reduce Scope 3 emissions.
Is my organisation eligible for SBTi's fast SME route? Check out the SBTi criteria here: link
If you are eligible, select one of the three goal setting options available to SMBs and follow the five goal setting steps, starting with "Complete the SME target setting form" through to the final step: "Target publication".
For larger companies
Albert Heijn and Gall & Gall also expect the larger (non-SME) suppliers to complete the SBTi validation by 30 June 2025 at the latest. This includes greenhouse gas emission reduction targets for scope 1, 2, and 3. When planning to meet the June 30, 2025 deadline, consider the reliance on SBTi's and their respective lead times (up to 24 months) for official validation.
Companies that do not qualify for the SME route follow the standard SBTi process. Consult this website and follow the 5 steps:
- Submit a commitment letter stating that you intend to set a science-based goal.
- Develop emission reduction targets in line with SBTi's science-based criteria.
- Submit your goal to the SBTi for official validation.
- Announce your objective and inform your stakeholders.
- Disclose your emissions annually and monitor progress.
Sector-specific guidelines for larger (non-SME) companies:
SBTi has drafted several industry guidelines with tailored, sector-specific requirements. Most of our suppliers fall within the SBTi-designated sector "Forest Land Agriculture" (FLAG). For all non-SME vendors that set (or update) Science Based Targets, please check (via this link) whether FLAG targets are recommended, required or not applicable. Non-SME suppliers setting up an SBT for the first time are required to use the SBTi-FLAG directive if they supply any of the following products:
- Food production (agricultural production and/or animal origin);
- Food & Beverage Processing;
- Retail sale of food and basic products;
- Forestry and paper products (forestry, wood, pulp and paper);
