Decarbonisation

Welcome to the 'Decarbonisation' section. Here you will find instructional videos, recommendations and tips for drawing up and implementing reduction plans.

To gradually reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we recommend following three steps:

  • Step 1 – Develop a Decarbonization Roadmap
  • Step 2 – Engage suppliers
  • Step 3 – Engage employees

Step 1 – Develop a Decarbonization Roadmap

Recommended next steps:

  1. Make a list of possible emission reduction measures.
  2. Enrich the list with, for example, management information, effects and costs and consider using the Emission Reduction template offered on this platform.
  3. Rank and prioritize measures and develop a business case if necessary.
  4. Engage your management and use the decarbonization roadmap to simplify decision-making and accountability.

Tips:

  1. When evaluating reduction measures, take into account desirable or undesirable side effects.
  2. Consider using the emission reduction template in our Documents
  3. In your decarbonisation roadmap, don't put off complex measures well into the future. If additional knowledge and experience is needed, take action today, for example by doing market research or a pilot.

Step 2 – Engage suppliers

Recommended next steps:

  1. Identify the suppliers you want to engage based on a spend analysis and create prioritized subsets of suppliers to differentiate your engagement.
  2. Proactively communicate your plans and ambitions to your suppliers, for example in personal dialogues, via a letter or via an introductory webinar.
  3. Start onboarding your high-priority suppliers and facilitate the exchange of data.

Tips:

  • Facilitate learning and development in your supply chain by referring to e-learning materials, such as this knowledge portal or SME Climate Hub
  • To accelerate emission reduction, facilitate the sharing of best practices between your suppliers.
  • To increase engagement, consider integrating climate KPIs into your standard documents and processes, for example in a supplier code of conduct, procurement requirements, or checklists for annual supplier reviews.

Step 3 – Engage employees

Recommended next steps:

  1. Build internal awareness about climate change and your organization's carbon footprint.
  2. Develop a governance structure in which management is accountable for progress on climate metrics.
  3. Develop a community of sustainability ambassadors and give them ownership of innovative 'hero projects'.

Tips:

  • Share your organization's footprint among your employees and address actions they can take to make them part of the solution.
  • Work with an internal price of carbon, so that emissions are monetized. And include this standard in cost/benefit analysis and project proposals. This creates an environment where your decision-making is more likely to contribute to climate action.
